Acne and post-acne

Treating active acne and improving the scars and marks it leaves are two different jobs. The inflammation has to be brought under control first; what it left behind comes after.

from €130 Duration: 60 min

What it is and when it is needed

Acne is a skin disease rather than a cosmetic flaw, so treatment starts with an examination by a dermatovenereologist. Procedures are part of a plan, not a substitute for one.

Laser treatments work on inflammation and on skin texture. Exactly which, and in what order, depends on whether the acne is still active or you are dealing with what it left.

  • The first step is a consultation that establishes the form and severity.
  • The result builds over a course; one appointment does not change the situation.
  • Home care is part of the treatment, not an extra suggestion.

Who it is for

These treatments are used for active acne and for its consequences. Severe forms may need systemic treatment — the doctor assesses that, and procedures are then combined with medication or postponed.

  • Inflammatory breakouts and comedones.
  • Enlarged pores and uneven texture.
  • Post-acne scarring.
  • Post-inflammatory marks left by breakouts.
  • Needing a care plan for oily skin.

How it goes

  1. Consultation

The doctor assesses the form and severity and what has been tried before, including your current medication.

  2. The plan

We agree a sequence of treatments and home care. It is often several different procedures rather than one repeated.

  3. The procedure

The skin is prepared and treated in the chosen mode. Redness and a feeling of warmth for a few hours are normal.

  4. Repeating

The interval between sessions is set by the doctor according to how the skin responds.

Results

The first changes usually show after several sessions rather than the first. Texture and scarring change more slowly than inflammation does.

Acne is a chronic condition: the aim is to control it and hold the result, not to promise you will never break out again. The doctor sets the maintenance plan.

Aftercare

The skin is more sensitive afterwards, and care in the first days directly affects the result.

  • SPF 50 daily — without it post-inflammatory marks only darken.
  • No scrubs, acids or retinoids for a few days unless the doctor said otherwise.
  • Do not squeeze or pick at breakouts — that is exactly how scars are made.
  • Avoid saunas and hard exercise for a day.
  • Stick to the agreed home care; without it the result of the treatments does not hold.

Contraindications

Some of these are temporary. The decision is the doctor’s, having assessed the skin and your medication.

  • Current or recent isotretinoin — the interval the doctor specifies must be observed.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding — some methods are not used.
  • A fresh tan, or a sunbed within the last two weeks.
  • Active infection, cold sores or broken skin in the area.
  • Photosensitising medication.
  • A tendency to keloid scarring — assessed individually.

Common questions

Will my skin clear after one session?

No. Acne is treated as a course, and the first changes usually show after several sessions.

Can these be combined with acne medication?

Sometimes yes, sometimes an interval is needed — particularly with isotretinoin. That is why the doctor needs to know everything you take.

Can post-acne scars be removed completely?

Their appearance can be improved, but complete disappearance cannot be promised. The doctor will set a realistic expectation at the consultation.

Are these suitable for teenagers?

Assessed individually and only after examination; for minors a parent’s consent is required.

Why sunscreen when there is no sun?

Post-inflammatory marks darken with UV all year round, so protection is part of the treatment, not a summer habit.
