Laser hair removal
The pigment in the hair absorbs the laser light, and the heat damages the growth zone. Only hairs currently in their growth phase respond — which is why this takes a course, not one appointment.
What it is and when it is needed
We use an alexandrite laser. The pulse targets the hair: its pigment absorbs the energy, which becomes heat and damages the follicle, while the surrounding skin, having less pigment, is left alone.
Hair grows in cycles and only some of it is in the growth phase at any time. Sessions are therefore spaced out, so that each wave is caught in turn.
- A course is needed: usually several sessions 4–8 weeks apart, depending on the area.
- Dark hair responds best; on blond, grey and fine vellus hair the method does little.
- The price depends on the area — the full list is in the price list.
Who it is for
This is for reducing hair long-term in an area you would otherwise shave or wax constantly. Before the first session we assess your skin phototype and hair colour, because that determines whether the method will work for you at all.
- Constant shaving or waxing that has become a chore.
- Ingrown hairs and the irritation they cause.
- Increased hair growth on the face or body.
- Skin irritation after shaving.
How it goes
-
Consultation and test
We assess skin phototype, hair colour and medical history, with a test pulse if needed.
-
Preparation
Shave the area on the day or the day before. Waxing, plucking and depilatory creams do not work here — they remove the target.
-
The session
Protective eyewear is worn. You feel a brief snap or warmth; the device cools the skin as it works.
-
The course
The next session is scheduled by area and by how the regrowth comes back.
Results
Some of the treated hairs shed within a few days. The result accumulates across the course: each session works on whatever share of the hair is in its growth phase at the time.
The method reduces hair long-term, but it is not permanent, complete removal — some follicles can recover over time, so a maintenance session is sometimes needed. How many sessions you will need depends on the area, on hormones and on hair type.
Aftercare
The skin stays more sensitive to light and heat for a while afterwards.
- Keep the area out of the sun and use SPF 50 on it for at least two weeks.
- Avoid saunas, hot baths, pools and hard exercise for a day.
- No scrubs or acids on the treated area for a few days.
- Between sessions you may shave — but not pluck or wax.
- No sunbeds during the course.
Contraindications
Some of these are temporary and the treatment can be done later. The final decision rests with the specialist, having assessed the skin and your medication.
- A fresh tan, or a sunbed within the last two weeks.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Photosensitising medication (some antibiotics, isotretinoin, St John’s wort).
- Active infection, cold sores, inflammation or broken skin in the area.
- Moles and pigmented spots in the area — these are worked around, and anything suspicious is assessed by a doctor first.
- Uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, photodermatoses — assessed individually.
Common questions
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the area, hair type and hormones. The specialist will tell you at the consultation rather than the website guessing in advance.
Will it work on blond hair?
The laser responds to pigment, so on blond, grey and fine vellus hair it does little. Better to establish that before a course than after one.
Does it hurt?
You feel a brief snap or warmth. The device cools the skin, and most patients tolerate it well.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes — shaving is fine and expected. Plucking and waxing are not: they leave the laser nothing to target.
Can it be done in summer?
Yes, but without a fresh tan and with SPF 50 used consistently. If you have just come back from holiday it will have to wait.
