Laser resurfacing

This works on skin texture: scarring, pores and fine lines. The price is a few days of recovery — plan for them in advance.

from €399 Duration: 90 min

What it is and when it is needed

A fractional laser treats the skin in points, leaving untouched skin between them. The skin heals from those islands faster, while the controlled injury prompts collagen production in the deeper layers.

So the result is not immediate: it forms over weeks as the skin heals and the collagen reorganises. A course is usually needed rather than a single session.

  • Plan realistically for 3–7 days of redness and peeling.
  • The doctor sets the intensity: it determines both the result and the recovery.
  • The darker months suit it better — the skin is especially sun-sensitive afterwards.

Who it is for

The method is for texture and scarring. If the issue is laxity or lost volume we will suggest another method at the consultation — a laser will not solve those.

  • Post-acne scarring and uneven texture.
  • Enlarged pores.
  • Fine superficial lines.
  • Uneven tone and dullness.
  • Stretch marks and scars after injury or surgery.

How it goes

  1. Consultation

The doctor assesses skin type and the nature of the scarring, and sets the intensity and number of sessions.

  2. Preparation

At least two weeks without a tan. Preparatory home care is sometimes prescribed.

  3. The session 30–45 min

Anaesthetic cream is used. You feel heat during the treatment; the skin is cooled.

  4. Recovery

For several days the skin is red and throbbing, then it peels. That is the expected course, not a complication.

Results

For the first days the skin looks worse than before the treatment — that is part of healing. Clarity and smoothness show from about the second week.

Collagen reorganises slowly, so the final change is judged 2–3 months after the course. Scarring can be improved substantially, but complete disappearance cannot be promised.

Aftercare

The recovery days determine the result more than the appointment does.

  • Do not pick the peeling skin — that is how marks and scars are left.
  • SPF 50 daily for at least 2–3 months; without it you will get pigmentation.
  • Avoid saunas, pools, sunbeds and hard exercise for a week.
  • Use only what the doctor recommended until the skin has recovered.
  • Make-up only when the doctor says so.

Contraindications

Some of these are temporary. The doctor decides after examining you.

  • A fresh tan, or a sunbed within the last two weeks.
  • Current or recent isotretinoin — the doctor’s interval must be observed.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Active infection, cold sores or inflammation in the area — with recurrent cold sores, preventive treatment is prescribed.
  • A tendency to keloid scarring.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, photodermatoses, autoimmune disease — assessed individually.

Common questions

How many days off will I need?

It depends on the intensity. Plan for 3–7 days of redness and peeling; the doctor will be more specific at the consultation.

Does it hurt?

Anaesthetic cream is used and you feel heat during the treatment. Afterwards the skin throbs for a few hours, much like sunburn.

How many sessions will I need?

Usually a course. The doctor will give you the number based on your skin and the scarring.

Will scars disappear completely?

Their appearance can be improved substantially, but complete disappearance cannot be promised. The doctor will set a realistic expectation beforehand.

Can it be done in summer?

Not advisable: the skin is especially UV-sensitive afterwards, and without strict protection you get pigmentation.
