Lip augmentation
The usual request is not "bigger lips" but more even ones, a clearer border, or lips that are simply hydrated. How much filler and where depends on which of those you want.
What it is and when it is needed
The treatment uses a hyaluronic acid filler — a substance the body makes itself, which binds water. It is placed in the lip tissue to add volume or define the border.
The result is temporary: the filler breaks down on its own. That is a feature — in a few months you can leave it, repeat it, or choose a different emphasis.
- We start with a smaller amount: adding later is easy, removing is not.

- A hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed — we talk about that beforehand.
Who it is for
This is for changing the shape, volume or hydration of the lips. If your main concern is fine lines around the mouth or the condition of the skin itself, we will suggest something else at the consultation.
- Naturally thin lips, or lips that have lost volume with age.
- Asymmetry between the two sides.
- An indistinct lip border.
- Dry, dehydrated lips — where the need is hydration rather than volume.
- Downturned corners of the mouth.
How it goes

Consultation
We go through what you want and assess the anatomy of the lips and the tissue around them, and agree the amount there and then.

Anaesthetic 15–20 min
A topical anaesthetic cream is used; most fillers also contain lidocaine.

Injections 20–30 min
The filler is placed with a needle or a cannula, depending on the area and the aim.

Review
We see you again after two weeks: before that the swelling has not settled and the result cannot be judged.
Results
The change in volume is visible immediately, but for the first days the lips are swollen — that is a reaction, not the result. The final shape is what you see at about two weeks.
How long the filler lasts varies with metabolism and with the material chosen. When it makes sense to repeat is decided at the review.
Aftercare
The lips are more sensitive for a day or two, and that mostly determines how fast the swelling settles.
- Do not touch or massage the lips for 24 hours unless the doctor told you otherwise.
- Avoid saunas, steam, sunbeds and hard exercise for two days.
- Avoid very hot and spicy food for a few days.
- No alcohol on the first day — it increases swelling.
- If you get recurrent cold sores, say so: preventive treatment may be needed.
Contraindications
Some of these are temporary and the treatment can be done later. The final decision is the doctor’s, at the consultation.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- An active cold sore on the lips — postponed until it has fully healed.
- Inflammation, infection or broken skin at the treatment site.
- Allergy to hyaluronic acid or to lidocaine.
- Autoimmune disease and clotting disorders — assessed individually.
- Recent dental work or an upcoming vaccination — the timing needs to be coordinated.
Common questions
Will it be obvious I had something done?
That depends on the amount and the technique. If you want a change nobody notices, say so at the consultation — starting small is entirely normal.
Does it hurt?
Anaesthetic cream is used and most fillers contain lidocaine. Most patients call it uncomfortable rather than painful.
How long will my lips be swollen?
Most visibly for the first two days, then it settles. It is better not to plan an important event that week.
Can the filler be removed?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme if needed. It is a separate appointment, done by the doctor.
Will my lips sag once it wears off?
No. As the filler breaks down the lips return to how they were.
When can I go back to work?
The same or the next day, depending on how much the swelling and any small bruises bother you.
